Here's a few tips on how to beat the heat:
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty; avoid caffeine and alcohol
- Slow down and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day
- Take frequent shade breaks
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Avoid too much sunshine and use sunscreen when you must be outside
- Protect your fact and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat
- Eat small meals and eat more often; eat more salads and other foods that do not require cooking
- Avoid using appliances that generate heat during the day (such as clothes dryers and ovens)
- Make sure your home is properly insulated to conserve energy and reduce your home's power demands for air conditioning (keep shades and blinds closed during the day to keep sunlight out)
- Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and let them know about the Cooling Centers
- NEVER leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles! Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can reacy over 140 degrees F within minutes!
